Overview
Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the most abundant low-molecular-weight antioxidant inside human and animal cells. Because it sits at the centre of cellular redox chemistry, it is a staple reference compound in cell biology, toxicology and biochemistry laboratories.Mechanism in research
Glutathione cycles between a reduced form (GSH) and an oxidised form (GSSG), and the ratio between the two is one of the most widely used laboratory measures of oxidative stress. It also serves as a substrate for detoxification enzymes and plays a role in maintaining the redox state of other cellular antioxidants.
